Why Reading Still Matters in the Age of Generative AI (Series Part 11)

Most people want to read more books, but when evening arrives, the gravitational pull of endless smartphone scrolling and algorithmically curated feeds overwhelms their intentions. Reading feels effortful; scrolling feels frictionless.

The solution is not more sheer willpower. It is to redesign the environmental architecture around your attention. If you must hunt for a book or make a conscious decision every night to open it, resistance wins. If your reading environment is structured deliberately, habits take root with remarkable speed.

Rule 1: Never Leave the Next Book Unselected

The greatest barrier between finishing one book and starting the next is the friction of selection. When you finish the last page of a great book, your brain seeks immediate dopamine. If you have to browse, search reviews, and deliberate, you will reach for your phone instead. Keep two to three pre-vetted titles on your nightstand or Kindle library ready to open.

Rule 2: Read What Grabs You, Without Guilt

Don’t force yourself through a dense 600-page tome that you feel you "ought" to read just to appear erudite. As naval Ravikant famously observed: "Read what you love until you love to read." If a book loses momentum after fifty pages, permit yourself to put it down and pick up another without guilt.
